Overview:

This hands-on training course will guide you through every step, from designing to printing on your Makerbot 3D printer.You will learn how to create a basic model in Sketchup, modify existing 3D models from Thingiverse, and use advanced print techniques available in your Makerbot printer for optimal results.

The course is designed for users in professional and educational environments to help increase your productivity and return on investment.

No formal qualifications are needed, just basic PC or Mac skills. We will provide free links for downloading the necessary software and resources required for the course.

 

Outline:

Printer set up:

• Levelling the build platform

• Loading and changing filament reels

Print your first model:

• Print a sample model from SD card

• Download an open source model from Thingiverse.com

• Slice the model in Makerware and print it.

From CAD to Print: Design and print your own model

• Design a basic part in Google Sketchup.

• Prepare your model for print:

  • Convert the model to STL/OBJ format.(in addition to Sketchup, we will explain how to convert models from other 3D CAD packages)

  • Verify if your model is manifold (valid for printing).

  • Additional steps for Dual Extrusion (Replicator 2X only)

• Makerware software

  • Overview

  • Open and position your model: the importance of print orientation for the best finish and dimensional stability

  • Position models for Dual Extrusion (Replicator 2X only)

  Print Options:

  • Speed vs. Resolution

  • Infill

  • Raft

  • Automatic support structures

  • Printing your model from SD Card vs. Printing from your Computer

• Sharing a printer with multiple users in a classroom or workplace environment

Maintaining your Makerbot printer

• Identify and solve common print issues

• Replace the cover tape on your platform

• Re-levelling the build plate

• Replacing the print Nozzle.
